Where French Interior Architecture Meets the Soul of Oman
Opened in 2024 in the heart of the Omani capital, Mandarin Oriental Muscat reflects Maison Cartron’s approach to luxury interior architecture: creating places deeply rooted in their cultural context while carrying the precision of French craftsmanship.
Through this 150-key hospitality project facing the Gulf of Oman, our Maison developed a vision where architecture, craftsmanship, hospitality and cultural storytelling come together in one spatial experience.
Each space was conceived as a contemporary interpretation of Omani heritage: its landscapes, traditions, historic maritime routes and unique culture of hospitality.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE INSPIRED BY OMANI CULTURE
From the earliest design phases, Maison Cartron carried out extensive research into the history and craftsmanship of the Sultanate of Oman.
The project draws inspiration from the country’s desert and mountain landscapes, Oman’s historic maritime routes, souks and local craftsmanship, traditional Omani motifs, and the Sultanate’s culture of welcome.
This cultural approach can be found throughout the hotel, from the lobby to the presidential suites, spa, reception rooms and guest rooms.
THE LOBBY: THE TRAVELLER’S SALON OF MUSCAT
The lobby of Mandarin Oriental Muscat was imagined as an introduction to the Omani experience.
Conceived as a “traveller’s salon”, it combines architectural monumentality with the warmth of a residential atmosphere.
Materials, lighting and perspectives were designed to create a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior, architecture and landscape.
The suspended lanterns, inspired by Oman’s historic trade routes, diffuse coloured light evoking the spices, fabrics and goods once transported across the world from Muscat.
The entire lobby is based on one central idea: allowing guests to immediately sense the cultural identity of the place, without falling into a folkloric or decorative interpretation.
DETAIL AS AN ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE
At Maison Cartron, detail is a fundamental dimension of interior architecture.
At Mandarin Oriental Muscat, this attention is expressed at every scale: headboards inspired by the Omani kumma, handcrafted brass lanterns, sculpted decorative panels, bespoke textiles, metallic inlays and motifs directly inspired by local heritage.
The guest room headboards are one of the clearest examples of this approach.
Inspired by the kumma, the traditional Omani cap, their patterns were developed in accordance with the scale and design constraints of local artisanal weaving techniques, preserving an authentic connection with Omani craftsmanship.
This attention to scale and production techniques anchors the project in genuine cultural continuity.

HOSPITALITY EXPRESSED THROUGH MATERIALS
The interior architecture of Mandarin Oriental Muscat is based on a material palette closely connected to the Omani territory.
Maple wood, Desert Rose marble, brass, leather, handcrafted textiles and natural stone compose spaces where materiality becomes part of the guest experience.
Sand, ochre, bronze and blue tones evoke the landscapes of the Sultanate: desert, mountains and coastline.
This material approach creates an interior architecture that is both contemporary and deeply rooted in its cultural environment.
BESPOKE DESIGN IN SERVICE OF THE EXPERIENCE
As in all Maison Cartron projects, bespoke design plays a central role at Mandarin Oriental Muscat.
Furniture, lighting, textiles and decorative elements were developed specifically for the project to ensure complete architectural coherence.
Certain pieces were created in close collaboration with local artisans, allowing French design excellence and the authentic expression of Omani heritage to enter into dialogue.
This bespoke approach moves beyond decoration to build a true architectural identity.
AN INTERNATIONAL VISION OF LUXURY INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE
Mandarin Oriental Muscat illustrates Maison Cartron’s ability to develop international hospitality design projects where local culture, architectural sophistication and artisanal excellence converge within one vision.
Through this project, our Maison continues to pursue an approach to luxury interior architecture founded on precision of detail, mastery of bespoke design, understanding of local cultures, and the creation of spaces designed to endure.
